An Autumnal Delight

When the larch forests around the Geisler peaks turn golden and the air fills with the scent of ripe earth and fallen leaves, one of the quietest and most delicious seasons begins in the Odles Slow Dolomites: Törggelen time. Autumn invites you to pause – and to savour.

A tradition with deep roots

Törggelen originates from the autumn harvest season. After the hard work – the grape harvest and the gathering of chestnuts – farmers, farmhands and relatives would gather in traditional taverns to taste the “Nuien” (the new, young wine) and feast together.

Today, Törggelen is a ritual of slowing down: an autumn hike through golden landscapes, followed by a hearty stop in warm parlours – where time seems to stand still and conversations matter more than appointments.

The autumn feast

Those who stop for Törggelen should arrive with a big appetite and even greater anticipation. The traditional menu features down-to-earth regional home cooking – honest, hearty, no frills. The starter: homemade Schlutzkrapfen with spinach or a warming barley soup.

The main course: hearty sausage, braised ribs, “Knospen” (blood sausages) – with sauerkraut and dumplings. The sweet finale: fragrant, freshly roasted “Keschtn” (chestnuts) and sweet Krapfen pastries. The perfect end to an autumn day.

Hike and indulge

The Eisack Valley is considered the birthplace of this tradition. Just a short drive from Villnöss and Lüsen, traditional taverns around Klausen, Brixen and Vahrn await discovery. Combine Törggelen with an autumn hike on the Lüsner Alm or in the Villnöss Valley – the walk to the tavern makes the appetite even better.

Pack your hiking boots, let yourself be enchanted by the autumn colours and experience a piece of authentic South Tyrolean tradition. Create your Dolomite moment.
