Enrosadira: When the Dolomites Glow

As the summer heat of the day slowly fades and dusk sets in, one of the most fascinating natural spectacles in the Alps begins in South Tyrol: Enrosadira – the legendary glow of the Dolomites. For a few minutes, the grey rock faces of the Geisler peaks and the Peitlerkofel turn a radiant rose-gold, before the colour fades again just as gently as it appeared.

A natural spectacle to experience, not just photograph

The name Enrosadira comes from Ladin and roughly means "turning rosy." Scientifically, the phenomenon is explained by the magnesium-calcium carbonate in the dolomite rock, which reflects the low-angled sunlight in a very particular way. For anyone seeing it for the first time, though, it feels less like physics and more like magic.

The best spots to watch the Enrosadira:

Santa Maddalena in Val di Funes – the postcard-famous little church with the Geisler peaks behind it, arguably the most iconic view in the Dolomites
Zans Alp – wide alpine meadows right below the Geisler north faces, with an unobstructed view
Glatsch Alp – set further back along the Adolf Munkel Trail, usually much quieter
Geisler Alp – close to the walls, where the glow feels especially intense and within reach
Herol in Luson – a viewpoint with a panoramic outlook onto the mountain range opposite
Würzjoch Pass – the pass connecting Val di Funes and Luson, from where the view sweeps across both valleys at once

Slow Dolomites Tip: Pack a warm jacket – even in summer, the alps cool down quickly once the sun sets. And enjoy the view every once in a while without looking through your camera lens!
